MINIATURE SUBMARINES 7″

MINIATURE SUBMARINES is a vehicle for the solo recordings of Mark Nelson, otherwise known for his work in Melbourne band The Stabs. Stylistically the Submarines music couldn’t be further removed from The Stabs sound – this is unashamedly and exercise in pop. The songs are layered in melodic guitar parts of repetition and feedback but presented with a care closer to a cotton wool caress than the steel wool scrape which Mark has been flaunting of recent years. Mark is joined by Monika Fikerle (Love of Diagrams, Baseball) who has been good enough to nail the hell out of the drum parts on the first couple of tracks.
This limited 7” inch includes the tracks,
I heard that you turned into a loser baby
The little room under the stairs
also a token for 2 track MP3 download of the 7″.
The 7 will be officially released on December 10 2009 but is available at Miniature Submarines gigs as of now.
STAY TUNED TO THIS ONE.
SEEKAE – SFTP + REMIX DISC

RICE IS NICE are very happy to bring you the re-release of Seekae’s “The Sound of Tree’s Falling on People” with bonus remix ep.
Since independently releasing their debut album “The Sound of Trees Falling on People” in December 08’ Seekae instantly impressed their audiences selling out of their initial pressing.
This compelling release resulted in a whirl of much deserved all star review and radio love which included, FBI album of the week and being describe in a 4 star Rolling Stone review as “an album that’s as ambient and mesmerizing as an iced-over forest.”
The band went on to create this remix ep mid 09, covering bands such as Ghoul, Megastick Fanfare and Bearhug. The group who are renowned for an vibrant live show incorporating drum machines, synthesizers, samplers, melodicas, guitars, drums, glockenspiels and even spoons sold out the venue for the launch by 9pm.
Seekae then went on to complete a string of dates up and down the coast with electronic/post-rock heavyweights Decoder Ring as well as dazzling crowds at Sydney’s Parklife festival and are to be hitting the road in Nov with The Midnight Juggernauts.
The band’s style sifts between ambient; glitch and hip hop, and surfs between the varying electronic sounds of Xela, Boards of Canada and Telefon Tel Aviv via the pop affability of Hot Chip. Somewhat appropriately, Seekae have dubbed their sound “ghetto ambient”.
The double disk release is out OCTOBER 16th 2009.
SHADY LANE – Here we go down the black hole

SHADY LANE are a pop/electronic four piece from Sydney. After years of performing as “Jordy Lane” with a geriatric iMac and a collection of backing tracks, Jordy was joined a few months ago by a full live band to recreate the electronic elements of his self-produced album, “Here We Go, Down The Black Hole”. Shady Lane now consists of Jordy Lane on vocals and guitar, Pete Avard on drums, Sarah Jullienne on synth and Conrad Richters (Richard In Your Mind) on bass.
Due for release on August 15 through RICE IS NICE, Here We Go, Down The Black Hole mixes simple folk songs and atmospheric pop with experimental electronica, field recordings and a few noisy beats.
The culmination of a project which began late in 2004, Here We Go… was almost all recorded and self-produced from Jordy’s various homes as he moved around Sydney’s inner-West. It’s this bedroom-fidelity that allowed him to so effectively capture and reproduce the dreamy, contemplative and occasionally abstract moods you can only arrive at in your own space and time. With occasional backing vocals from Sarah Kelly (on ‘Galileo’) and Kaity Fox (on ‘Oh My God’), and cello from Ella Colley (on ‘This Is Death’ and ‘Oh My God Again’), the majority of the album is just Jordy, his pensive mind, his captivating voice and his computer.
With cover art designed by renowned local art duo We Buy Your Kids, the album includes triple j favourites ‘Galileo’ and ‘Ouch My Head’, as well as the latest single, ‘Absolute Truth’. They’re songs inspired by reading, by time spent alone, by thinking too much and by those unfortunately rare but always electrifying conversations with friends and strangers about why we exist and what we’re on this earth for.
What people have been saying about Shady Lane:
“A melding of folk, pop and synthesisers, his performance was an indie take on Death Cab For Cutie with a dash of Aphex Twin” - Drum Media
“[Galileo] is smart, heliocentric pop very much of the Postal Service school. The electronic elements are for the most part subdued by sweet descending melodies and organic guitar parts. A great story, a great song.” - Vijay Khurana, JJJ
TALONS – Talons

TALONS are to release their debut self-titled album through RICE IS NICE May 30th!! YES!!
The band have completed their greatly awaited chart busting album with Tim Carr (Dead China Doll, Ohana) in the producer chair, resulting in a rocket recording which is set to do wonders for the band.
The album follows on from their acclaimed EP, Ducats. Recorded before they’d barely begun playing together, in earnest it shows a band already mature and focused. It’s a bomb-blast of energy that serves as a blueprint for their most recent excursions into a more melodic and adventurous territory.
Not only do the band record such awesome and incredibly talented records in the studio, but they are enormously huge on stage! To date they’ve shared stages with the likes of Future of the Left (Mclusky), Further, The Mint Chicks, Die! Die! Die!, The Mess Hall, Regular John, Tucker B’s, Spod, Batrider, Violent Soho, Children Collide, The Holy Soul, Witch Hats, Stature: Statue, and The Stabs, as well as a bunch of festivals including this years Laneway.
Talons are Christian J Best (vocals, guitar), Ben James (drums), and Mitch Pangas (bass).
This is an exciting year for Talons so expect to hear lots more.
Here’s what people have been saying about TALONS:
“Their EP is some of the best music you will hear this year and if it didn’t leave us with such a thirst for more it would certainly be a clear frontrunner for our favourite release of 2007.” www.polaroidsofandroids.com
“Sydney’s Talons sound as though they’re from another generation of Australian punk… Yet it’s not a certain time period I’m hearing, it’s timelessness.” www.ravemagazine.com.au
“Thundering out of your speakers with unnatural force, Ducats is a punk rock EP of the highest order –. Talons are one of Sydney’s tightest live bands right now, but luckily, their songs lose none of their power when transferred to tape.” www.timeoutsydney.com.au
“It’s raw stuff, and gloriously so….[Talons] could well end up fostering quite a deservedly wide fan base, despite their brutally noisy tendencies.” www.dbmagazine.com.au
TRAPS – Standard Life 7″

STANDARD LIFE / BRAINWASHER – Limited 7” release out MAY 1st.
RICE IS NICE are excited to bring you the first vinyl release from Traps.
After a successful single release in 2008, leading to an onslaught of live performances including playing with These New Puritans (UK), Children Collide, Pivot and festivals Playground Weekender, Essential Festival and My Filthy Riot, Traps are now on to their second release which is the smashingly limited 7” ‘Standard Life’.
‘Standard Life’ is the second single, but first to vinyl from Sydney based Traps. Its powerful rhythm section and off kilter guitars, complemented by hypnotic vocals create a driving anthem to kick off what is set to be a busy year for these fine gents. This limited press 7” also plays the rare b-side ‘Brainwasher’, a song composed almost entirely on a Casio keyboard fed through washing delays, distortion and flangers, creating an eerie, ghostly sound, a new side to traps not yet heard!
This release is just a snippet of what you can expect to hear from this up and coming group in 2009. Be sure to catch the ‘Standard Life’ clip at www.myspace.com/killthetraps
In support of this release, Traps will be launching the record on Saturday, May 23 at Curious Works Studio (Suite 402 / 11 Randle St, Surry Hills). Starting from 8pm with special guests to be announced. This will be the first of many live shows in 2009, where you will have a chance to see Traps performing their brilliant rousing, dark, jangly guitar-led numbers.
Traps are Kieran Day on vocals, guitar and keys; Ben Hassell on lead guitar and vocals; Matt Edge on bass and Mal Page on drums.
Combining quick paced guitar stabs, a driving beat and nonchalant vocals, this is the finest slice of indie I’ve heard come out of this city in a while. - 3D world
It’s Impossible to ignore the fact that Traps are a talented band - Polaroids Of Androids
There is something about the bands sounds that is so fantastically abrasive. - Music Feeds
