The Laurels debut “Plains” is set to be released by Rice Is Nice in the US distributed by Red Eye this week (April 16)!

The Laurels are hitting the US in support of the release and are playing Austin Psych Fest which in a word, rules.

This May 27, four independent international labels are joining forces to release a split 7” of two of their favourite artists. The split 7” will feature singles by Among Brothers (UK) and our very own Shady Lane.

The labels involved are run by four innovative women. Kissability in the UK is run by Jen Long aiming to ‘make the music a little more awesome’ , Cardinal White in the US run by Jess Abbott of projects Now, Now and Tancred, Japanese label HOU run by Haruna Taira who is also a key promoter for artists such as Toe and yours truley, Julia Wilson here at AUS camp Rice Is Nice.

Among Brothers are a pop seven-piece based in Cardiff and London. Mixing experimental beats, theatrical chants and percussive flourishes they create a vibrant pop style anchored by evocative narrative themes. Following a busy 2012 which saw the band release singles on Kissability (Jen Long/Transgressive) and Too Pure Singles Club, support Los Campesinos!, FAYE and Toy, and played an intimate showcase at The Great Escape Festival, Among Brothers are already gearing up for an equally busy 2013.



Shady Lane began as a laptop-based solo project in Jordy Lane’s bedroom in Sydney Australia. After signing with Rice Is Nice Records, the debut album Here We Go, Down The Black Hole was released and a live band was formed to translate the electronic-pop project to the stage. 2012 saw the release of their second album Built Guilt. This time the computer elements were replaced with analogue synths, organs, circuit-bent toys, live drums and louder, prouder, playful guitars. With sold out album launches and international touring on the cards, Shady Lane are ready to play.

Synth-savvy songstress Seja returns in 2013 with her single ‘C’mon’, a dreamy three minute stroll through a garden of cheerful pop delights. Mellotronic bees buzz alongside swooping synthesised birds, while happy couples daydream in the swaying layers of beautiful harmonic branches.

‘C’mon’ is a first tiny taste of things to come on Seja’s upcoming LP ‘All Our Wires’, a collection of pop gems that looks to be a sunnier, more pastoral take on the spacey synth-scaping that she first brought to the world back in 2009 on her debut ‘We Have Secrets But Nobody Cares’. This single specifically sees the blonde balladeer looking back to earnest pop icons of the 60’s and 70’s, influences of which can be heard in the shimmering acoustic guitarwork, the enchanting “ow woaw woaw’s”, and the sweetly crafted rhythm section, all recorded by Seja herself and her brother Mirko.

While this inspiring single is the singular product of the Vogel siblings, her upcoming album will feature work from Robert Forster of the Go-Betweens, electronica guitarist Tim Hoey of Cut Copy and former bandmate Ben Ely from her period playing keys for Regurgitator. Having contributed to a mess of Aussie pop bands, doing a slew of shows on her own, with her band and in support of some big international female artists as well as writing and recording her own album, Seja’s ‘All Our Wires’ is teeing up to be a halcyon distillation of her works thus far.

‘All Our Wires’ will be released through Rice Is Nice this June.

2012 was a big year for Sydney psychedelic four piece The Laurels. They signed a deal with Rice is Nice, released their debut album ‘Plains’ to widespread critical acclaim, toured Australia, sold out shows and cemented themselves as one of the most exciting and promising bands in the country.

Now the only logical thing for them to do, is to do it all over again, only somewhere else.

Rice is Nice is very proud to announce the USA release of ‘Plains’ this April in the USA.

To support this momentous occasion, The Laurels will be touring across the USA and displaying their skills to a fresh and deserved new audience. Amongst the tour dates is a spot at the highly respected Austin Psych Fest. The Laurels will join the likes of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Black Angels, Deerhunter, Warpaint, Os Mutantes, Tinariwen and Spectrum, to only name a few.

Before the band leave our shores, they are holding a special fundraiser show to help line their pockets with a few greenbacks so they won’t have to eat tacos every single day and possibly afford an extra set of guitar strings, should Luke break a few, which is by no means out of the question.

To bid them farewell they’ve managed to get very special friends and guests World’s End Press along for the party as well as long time lovers Zeahorse and East River.
The Laurels will also be performing at Dig It Up Festival (Sydney Only) April 21st. They fly out to the USA the next day.

This April 20 for Record Store Day we will be releasing a limited editon gatefold vinyl of Good Heavens’ debut album ‘Strange Dreams’. The release includes artwork from the bands drummer Myles Heskett, making it a beautiful edition sonically and visually.

The band also have a brand new video clip for single ‘You Lose’. The clip was directed by SPOD in the haunting outback of New South Wales. ‘You Lose’ was the bands first collaboration as a three piece, it is an indication of what is yet to come from this brilliant new band.

Richard Cartwright, the titular frontman of Sydney sunshine-psych outfit and claimant to property rights inside your mind, never misses an opportunity when it comes to the weird and the wonderful. In peculiar prose, Richard explains the origins of the brass, the beach and the bovine that grace the cover of Richard in Your Mind’s latest EP titled Mozzarella, which is available now on iTunes.

I took the photo
On the banks of the Ganges, in the north of the country
It’s like a grey, stoney beach.
There is an Israeli girl named Sharon beckoning to a cow
And there is a man in the background playing saxophone in his speedos
Who once made Joni Mitchell cry
At the Isle of Wight.

His name is Joe

We hung out with him for a week or so
And he told us of his life.

He was a yogi
And had heard om twice,
Once was when he was on acid.

I would jam with him -
He played sax while I played guitar.
He enjoyed it and offered to take me as a student
So that I too could hear om.

I was tempted…
Sort of.
But I declined
He seemed nice but kinda weird.

We later found out that he made Joni Mitchell cry.

He had a classic old car
Which he drove all around India in,
listening to jazz.
My friend Phil and I sat in the boot
When he drove us to a waterfall one time.

That was nice.

He told us he no longer smoked Charas,
But ate bhang powder.
I think this was because while the effects of the ganja helped him on his spiritual journey,
The effects of the smoke were negative and counteracted the spiritual benefits.

Our friend Josh recognised him from the Isle of Wight doco
Message to Love.
He asked Joe about it, and sure enough he said he was there.

He didn’t seem too happy about the memory.
He rambled when recalling it and I think he was very high back then.
He mentioned being employed to paint the fences invisible
And how he was frustrated about coming up against a kind of resistance in his task.
I remember him quoting her song Woodstock, talking about being “caught in the Devil’s bargain, and we have to get ourselves back to the garden”

We watched the Isle of Wight doco
When we got home to Australia.
And there he was,
Interrupting Joni Mitchells set to make an announcement.

It seemed it was very important to him.
He was met with resistance
And was forcibly removed from the stage.

Joni Mitchell was sad about the violence.
She was just trying to be a peaceful hippy songbird
And Joe’s enflamed mind rose up and smashed things about a bit.

It must have been very upsetting.
She wept.

He moved to India
Became a yogi
